John’s Writing Journey
Born in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, John Sibley has traversed a rich and varied life journey that is reflected in his compelling storytelling. His life is a testament to hard work, resilience, and boundless creativity, values instilled in him by his father, who often played the Boogie Woogie on a Steinway piano and reminded him, “You can be anything you want with hard work and talent.”
Growing up on the west side of Chicago until the age of 12, John then moved to Robbins, Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago, where he lived until 19. These early years shaped his worldview and fed his artistic spirit. John is married and a proud father of three adult children – two daughters and a son. His family has always been a source of inspiration and support, particularly his youngest daughter, who has also embarked on her writing journey.
A Vietnam-era veteran, John has had a multifaceted career as an artist, author, and veteran. He now dedicates his time to being a full-time middle school art teacher, a role that allows him to inspire young minds. His hobbies, including chess, boxing, dancing, painting, writing, and nature walks, reflect his eclectic interests and the diverse ways he finds fulfilment. His journey as a writer began in the sixth grade, when his teacher, Ms. Robinson, recognised his talent. Influenced by his cousin Levy, John developed a unique creative vision that blends art with storytelling. His passion for writing was reignited by a desire to craft a sci-fi novel that would offer a fresh perspective on space adventures.
USS OBAMA 2130
“USS OBAMA 2130” is more than just a book; it’s a labour of love and a bold attempt to shift paradigms. Drawing from his experiences as a veteran, John weaves a military space opera that explores socio-political and cultural themes and the human impact of interplanetary travel. The novel is inspired by the Voyager 1’s golden record, which carries the soulful song of Blind Willie Johnson, and imagines the alien reaction to these earthly sounds.
John wants readers to feel as if they are stepping off a thrilling roller coaster ride by the time they finish “USS OBAMA 2130,” leaving them with a thirst for more adventures and a deeper appreciation for his storytelling. His family, especially his youngest daughter, takes great pride in his creative achievements, supporting his dream of making “USS OBAMA 2130” a global hit so he can continue writing full-time.
