Breaking the Silence:
The Story of Andrew Brookman’s Struggle and Triumph
Andrew Brookman’s life story is one of profound transformation – an evolution from silence to a powerful, resounding voice. His journey is one of immense personal struggle, resilience, and, ultimately, a reclaiming of his identity. It’s a tale that speaks to the heart of anyone who has ever felt like they didn’t belong, and it’s a testament to the strength that comes from embracing one’s true self, no matter how difficult or delayed that process may be…
For much of his life, Andrew felt invisible. As a young boy, he was shy, introverted, and different. While other children spent their days with friends, Andrew found solace in solitude. He never felt he was part of his surroundings, – instinctively he knew that his truth had to be hidden from the world.
“I grew up feeling like I wasn’t part of the world around me,” Andrew reflects. “I didn’t know how to connect with anyone. I felt like an outsider like I didn’t belong in any of the spaces I was in.”
“Sometimes It Was Hard To Even Breathe.”
His isolation deepened as he entered his teenage years. Panic attacks and anxiety became frequent companions. Hiding his true self wasn’t just about suppressing his sexuality – it was about surviving in a world where his feelings and identity were not only misunderstood but unwelcome.
“It was hard to breathe sometimes, knowing I was hiding such a big part of who I was,” he recalls.
Growing up in a family with strong opinions and expectations made it even harder for Andrew to express himself. His inner conflict continued to grow, and he withdrew further, retreating into a life of isolation for the next 30 years. His secret weighed him down, and the emotional turmoil was suffocating.

Changes Didn’t Break The Chains
As society began to change – when gay relationships were finally being accepted and celebrated – Andrew’s fears only grew. He saw younger generations living their truth, building lives together, getting married, and even having children. Meanwhile, Andrew remained in the shadows, too terrified to join them.
“It was like a double-edged sword,” he explains. “On one hand, I was happy for them; on the other, I was terrified. There was this fear of rejection. I thought, ‘Who would accept me at my age?’ Society was moving on, but I was still hiding. The older I got, the harder it was to step into the light.”
This ever-present fear of rejection and discrimination intensified with age.
“We like to think we grow wise with age, but the truth is, the fears just shift. When you’re older, the rejection doesn’t just come from your family or friends – it comes from society at large. You feel like an outsider all over again.”
“I Found My Voice”
Yet, amidst the overwhelming silence of those years, something remarkable began to happen. Andrew picked up a pen and began to write. What started as an outlet for his inner turmoil became the gateway to his freedom. For the first time, he found the courage to let his voice be heard.
“Writing was my salvation,” he admits. “I’d been carrying so much pain, so many unspoken truths. And then, one day, I just picked up a pen and started writing. Writing became a way to connect with myself. It gave me a voice – one I didn’t even know I had. Through writing, I found my worth. I realized that I existed, that my story mattered.”
And Andrew’s story is one that matters deeply. His journey has not only been one of personal healing but also of empowering others. His stories – both fiction and non-fiction – tackle the complexities of growing up LGBTQ. Through his writing, he has created a safe space not only for himself but for others who have struggled with the same feelings of isolation and rejection.

No Longer In The Shadows
Andrew is now preparing to release his memoir, ‘Colours Of A Rare Bird’. The book is an honest and powerful reflection on his life – one that underscores the importance of seeking help, embracing vulnerability, and supporting one another in a world that often feels harsh and unforgiving.
“It’s not a story about coming out,” Andrew says. “It’s about living in the shadows for so long. It’s about the struggle of trying to breathe when you’re suffocating under the weight of fear and shame. It’s about finding a way to live authentically when the world around you tells you that you don’t belong.”
Andrew’s memoir serves not only as a recount of his journey but also as an inspiration of hope for those who feel lost and alone. He encourages anyone who has struggled with their own identity to remember that there is always a path forward – even when that path seems impossible to see.
“Even in the darkest times,” he affirms, “there is always a way forward. And that way often starts with the simple act of sharing your story. It’s about being heard, being seen. And most importantly, it’s about knowing that you’re not alone.”

“THE CHARITY I SUPPORT – PRIDE IN AGEING”
As part of his ongoing commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, Andrew has partnered with the LGBT Foundation’s Pride in Ageing programme. This initiative, which was established in 2019, is dedicated to addressing the issues of isolation and discrimination that many LGBTQ+ individuals over 50 face. As someone who didn’t come out until later in life, Andrew deeply resonates with the programme’s mission.
“I understand the challenges that older LGBTQ+ individuals face,” he explains. “When you’re older and you’ve spent so many years hiding, it can feel like there’s no room for you in the world anymore. But the Pride in Ageing programme creates a space for those of us who’ve been forgotten. It gives us a voice.”
Andrew is donating a portion of the proceeds from his memoir to the Pride in Ageing programme, ensuring that others who have struggled in silence have the support they need. He is also encouraging others to get involved by participating in fundraising events or making donations to the cause.

STAND TOGETHER
“Every contribution, no matter how small, helps create change,” Andrew urges. “It’s about building a community where we can all be ourselves without fear or shame. The Pride in Ageing programme is changing lives, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”
Andrew’s journey from loneliness to literary success is an inspiring reminder that no matter how isolated we may feel, there is always a way forward. And sometimes, that path begins with the simple act of sharing our stories.
